Cord strapping: As Strong as Steel Strapping

With industry users quickly switching over to other options from steel strapping, cord strapping has been featured as one of the best options in the packaging industry. Cord strapping follows close on the heels of poly strapping which is considered as strong as steel. There are, as usual, many opinions in the industry as to the kind of strapping that can be best used. Many have chosen cord strapping as the next best to steel strapping because it protects the goods from damage.

Manufactures are using the latest polyester strapping technology in order to produce cord strapping which is also very cost effective. These are used by a wide range of industries, right from lumber, heavy metal, alloy and steel industries.

Cord strapping comes in three different varieties:

  • Composite
  • Woven
  • Bonded

According to manufacturers of cord strap, composite cord strapping is made using the non-metallic polyester strapping technology and has the strength and rigidity of steel. This kind of strapping is mainly designed for palletizing and bundling cargo. The weight of the cargo and the application used decides which type of cord strapping, composite, bonded or woven to be used. Composite is used for heavy cargo.

Benefits of using cord strapping

  • Strong as steel
  • Safe for users and receivers
  • Very cost effective
  • Relatively no damage
  • Shock absorbent
  • Weather resistant

Cord strapping has high retained tension when compared to some other kinds of strapping and also has a high system strength. System strength should not be confused with break strength. Break strength is measured by taking a 6” piece of strapping and pulling it until it breaks. System strength is the European method that tests the whole loop, including the buckle. It is said that system break strength is often double the linear break strength. Generally, the American standard of break strength is only used to compare strapping.

Another advantage of cord strapping is that it can be re-tensioned easily and is light weight and portable. The workmen find it easy to carry this strapping around as the risk of injury is far less as it does not have sharp edges. Also, even if exposed to the elements, it withstands the weather and does not rust or rot. The company’s name and logo can also be printed on the strapping and this is effective for business reasons. It is also chemical resistant. With so many advantages, cord strapping has found many takers in the market. One just needs to have some buckles and tensioners and they are good to go.
